Flowers surrounded by bracts with dark red-brown patches on the sides
Habit:
Tufted perennial to 50 cm high

Distinguishing characteristics (within family/genus):
This species has 3-20 spikelets per inflorescence with an involucral bract that is equal in length or exceeding the spikelets to 1.5 cm long
